Start with the problem, the existing code and the people who will maintain the result. We agree on a useful first scope, delivery milestones and how the work will be reviewed before implementation.
We work in your normal engineering process where practical: shared requirements, code review, tests and regular check-ins. Your team keeps product decisions and accepts the finished work.
At handoff, you get the code, documentation and decisions needed to maintain what was built. If the task is still unclear, a short discovery phase can establish the scope first.
